Tess and Andrew Herbert chose the Camden model from Paal kit homes because they were able to create a home layout that suited their rural property in the central west of New South Wales.
The couple and their three children had lived in a 1920s house in town before deciding to build on the land where they operate a cattle feedlot business.
They saw Paal’s classic Victorian-style Camden advertised in a rural newspaper and subsequently visited the fully-furnished exhibition home at Paal’s display centre at Emu Plains.
“It was the interior of the house that decided us. We loved the large central living area, which we knew would catch the northern sun while also giving us views over the Lachlan River to the south of our property,” Tess said.
“We extended the verandahs around three sides of the house - and also mirror-reversed the kids’ bedrooms and study with the formal lounge room and dining area so that the bedrooms faced the sun. These design alterations weren’t a problem at all for Paal.”
Their house was erected by a local builder with additional help from a bricklayer as well as skilled tradespeople for the plumbing and wiring.
“Our builder liked working on the house. He wasn’t used to steel framing as he normally works with timber, but he found that everything fitted together fine,” she said.
“Owner managing the project wasn’t a problem for me and Andrew, because we knew all the local tradespeople."
The exterior of their new home is finished in cream rendered brick, while the interior is also in cream, with polished timber flooring and luxurious rugs in the family area.
“It’s a very comfortable, roomy, liveable house - a great family home. The layout is excellent. We love it,” Tess said.
