PAAL KIT HOMES, STEEL FRAME HOUSES IN KIT FORM FOR THE OWNER BUILDER & OWNER MANAGER

Couple add Al Fresco and home cinema

Jeff and Di Wilson of Morayfield, Queensland, changed the standard Hawkesbury design by adding a nine-metre covered Al Fresco area at the rear. "We’re out in it all the time. We live there," Jeff said.

The Al Fresco is a feature of the Richmond design, but the Wilsons were able to adopt it for the Hawkesbury, illustrating the simplicity of altering Paal’s standard house plans to suit yourself.

The couple also converted the formal lounge/dining room into a home cinema.

"We kept rethinking our house plans as new ideas occurred to us. In the end, we made quite a lot of changes, which was never a problem for Paal. They were always very helpful," Di said.

The Wilsons initially chose to build with Paal because of the completeness of the home kit."We found that the Paal kit contained everything, including kitchen, bathroom and laundry fittings, whereas some of the other kits didn’t. It definitely seemed good value," Di said.

The couple looked for six months before making their final decision to buy from Paal.

They were impressed by the company’s new showroom that had recently opened in Caboolture, exhibiting a cutaway section of a steel-framed Paal wall. There were termites in the area and Jeff had seen the damage done to other homes.

The Wilsons undertook construction themselves, with help from family, friends and neighbours.

"I’m a handy person, although not a professional. The house was straightforward to build and it was nice to achieve something progressively as each stage was completed," Jeff said.

Di said, "When we moved into the house we said, this is so big!" Jeff added, "It’s like being on holiday all the time."

The Wilsons estimated that their project management and labour, with that of family and friends, saved around $100,000.

An Open House held upon completion saw scores of couples inspecting the house and talking to the homebuilders.

"People were amazed at the versatility of the home, the quality of the finishes, and the fact that you can alter the standard plans as you please. That’s the beauty of building with Paal," Jeff said.
