A fitting design for a country getaway

Sydney resident, Elizabeth Briger decided to build a weekender in Moss Vale for her and her family to use as a holiday house. “I had the land for many years with a little shack on it, so I demolished the shack and built a house,” she says. “I have a lot of grandchildren who will all come and stay.”

Elizabeth started looking at kit homes online and decided to try Paal. “I would have liked to have gone to an architect, but I didn’t have that sort of money,” she says. “I just wanted to make it as easy as possible.”

Elizabeth met with Michael Christie and decided on the Patterson as she felt it would suit her 960sqm block. “I picked that one because it suited the land and it gave me the three bedrooms and study,” says Elizabeth. “And it fits the general feel of the place.”

Needing a builder to carry out the work, Elizabeth engaged Nathan Phillips from Arise Building Services on Paal’s recommendation. “That was very good,” says Elizabeth. “Nathan had built with Paal before, so he knew what he was doing.”

Elizabeth visited the Paal office a couple of times to finalise her plans and also sat down with Paal’s interior designer, Narelle Jarman. “Narelle was so good,” she says. “We went through and chose everything, and the build was absolutely clear from that moment on.”

Elizabeth made a few minor tweaks here and there, such as changing doorways and a few windows, extending the kitchen, even adding another built-in cupboard during the build. “Michael did it all for me, it was no problem,” she says. “And he made really good suggestions that I didn’t think about.”

The eight-month build was a success and Elizabeth was happy with Paal’s service. “Michael answered all my emails and phone calls immediately,” she says. “It all went so smoothly.”

School holidays are now fast approaching and, apart from needing to buy few more pieces of furniture and plant a hedge, the home is ready for guests - and Elizabeth is delighted with the final result. “Of all the homes I looked at, that was the one I thought fitted in,” she says. “It’s perfect for Moss Vale – it looks like Moss Vale.”
