Building brings a sense of achievement
Michael Johnstone of Kurrajong chose to build with Paal because he wanted the satisfaction of constructing his own home. With his partner Theresa, he achieved his goal and declared himself very satisfied with the result.
“There’s a real sense of achievement. Months after moving in, I’m still saying to myself, did I do this? I can’t believe I could do it,” he said.
Living on six acres, Michael and Theresa chose Paal’s four-bedroom-plus-study Riverina design, which offers large rooms for relaxed living and plenty of space in which to move.
“We looked at a number of other kit home suppliers, but decided to go with Paal because when we went to their display centre, everything seemed so very professional. There was a good vibe.”
The couple adopted the standard Riverina plan, changing the kitchen layout, swapping the main bedroom and ensuite around, and adding verandahs with an Alfresco area to take advantage of a bush outlook at the rear of the house.
Michael undertook most of the building himself, with help from tradespeople for the plastering, tiling and roofing – and of course the plumbing and electrical fit-out.
“One reason we went with Paal was because their home kit came with full instructions. Although I’ve renovated houses before, I wasn’t confident about building from scratch,” he said.
“As it turned out, I couldn’t be happier with the building process and the support I got from Paal. They were amazingly helpful. If I was unsure of anything at all, Paal were only a phone call away.
“It was great knowing they were there. You always feel there’s someone in your corner.”
The family lived in a shed onsite while their house was being built and were naturally happy when it was completed.
“Theresa was very understanding, as well as confident I could do it. Now she loves our new home, and the kids love it too,” Michael said.
