Building a second time with Paal
When Debbie-Ann and Bert Adrichen decided to build a new home on two-acres just outside Young, they immediately thought of Paal Kit Homes. Mostly because Debbie-Anne had built a Paal home six years before and was happy with the process. “I liked the service we received,” says Debbie. “And the fact you can make changes to the plan to suit. With other building companies you don’t often have that option.”
Previously, Debbie-Anne built the Hawkesbury and was happy with the layout. So, when she and Bert met with Michael Christie, in the Canberra office, they picked the same design, but simply customised it to suit their lifestyle. “We wanted to build something from scratch that suited both Bert and me,” says Debbie-Anne. “It’s similar to the plan but we just tweaked it.”
This time around, the couple chose to brick the home, rather than use cladding. “This will be less work to maintain later down the track,” says Debbie-Anne.
Other modifications included increasing the size of the master suite, adding a bath to the ensuite and extending the walk-in-wardrobe. They also moved the study door to the hallway to create more wall space. “This meant we could add a built-in unit in the study,” says Debbie-Anne.
The size and layout of the Hawkesbury was a huge advantage. “I like the practicality of having all the spare bedrooms up one end of the house,” says Debbie-Anne. “We often have family come to visit which gives them privacy as well when staying; we also added a French door in the hallway, so that when guests are staying and I’m in the kitchen, I’m not going to disturb them.”
The other attraction was being able project manage the build and organise their own sub-contractors.
Being an interior designer, Debbie-Anne took care of the decorating and was able to source pieces such as kitchen pendant lights, chandeliers for the bathrooms and entry, bathroom hardware and handles for all the cabinetry.
Overall, the build went smoothly, and the couple was delighted with Paal. “Michael has been so helpful all the way through,” says Debbie-Anne. “It worked out really well for us.”
And now, six months down the track, the couple couldn’t be happier. “It has turned out to be a beautiful home,” says Debbie-Anne. “We are both very happy with the design.”
