A lot more home for their budget

Building their new home themselves enabled Jess and Damian Cutmore to save money and finish up with exactly the home they wanted.

“On our budget, we could not have built the home with a builder. A kit home was the best way for us. I can only guess the saving, but with the size of the project, it would be $120,000 to $140,000,” Damian said.

The couple built Paal Kit Homes’ spacious Hartley design in Lakesland, near Picton, south of Sydney. They modified the plan to create six bedrooms and a large games room, while retaining a separate sleeping end, rear entertaining area, open living and kitchen zone, and an attached double garage.

“Michael Christie of Paal is an absolute champion, and was very patient and understanding with all our modifications and questions,” Damian said.

He and Jess chose to build with Paal because they liked the design of the home and – after extensive research – also liked the company, their people, and the flexibility of the design and build.

The Cutmores assembled as much of the home as they could, including the frame, external cladding, roofing, kitchen, doors, windows and architraves. Tradespeople were hired for the concrete slab, gyprocking, tiling, and electrical and plumbing work.

“The frame construction was very simple for a large complex home. The numbering of the frames and roofing made it very easy to follow, as well as plan for the next area to build,” Damian said.

“Our home is approximately 32 metres by 20 metres, but the roof purlins lined up with every roof truss bolthole over the entire roof. I didn’t have to drill extra holes to make it work. To me, that is amazing – the accuracy in the design.”

He and Jess and their children are now greatly enjoying their Paal home. “The features we built in, including full insulation, make it very liveable. The home is functional and fits into the landscape very nicely. Our friends have only positive comments to make.

“And yes, I would consider building again with Paal. I’ve already recommended them to other people,” Damian said.
