The Only Way to Build – A Seamless Experience with Paal

After 42 years on their Maraylya property, Catherine and Stephen decided it was time to build their dream retirement home. Something tailored to their lifestyle, but without the stress they remembered from previous builds.

Having built four homes before, they knew how overwhelming it could be. “This time, we wanted it to be easier,” says Catherine.

Their daughter suggested Paal Homes, and from the first meeting with housing consultant Michael Christie, (in the Canberra office) they knew they were in good hands. “Michael really listened and helped shape our ideas into something even better than we imagined,” says Stephen.

The couple selected the Robertson design, but what made the process exceptional was Paal’s flexibility during the planning stage. “You start with a base plan and then make it your own,” explains Catherine. They customised the layout to include open-plan living, perfect for entertaining, with an adjoining alfresco, a sunny master bedroom retreat, a walk-in linen press, and a butler’s pantry. They even added a custom TV cabinet for a seamless, functional look.

They managed the build while living in a caravan onsite and called on trusted trades, including their nephew Nathan, owner of Cedar Ridge Construction P/L, who handled the framework and roofing. “Stephen helped too but not on the roof!” laughs Catherine. With Stephen’s vast real estate experience and strong network of trades, they were able to keep everything moving smoothly and efficiently.

A major advantage was Paal’s efficient, stage-by-stage delivery of materials. “Everything arrived on time, exactly when we needed it,” says Stephen. “During Covid, that was a lifesaver most people were struggling to get materials at all.”

Catherine, with her background in decorating, selected all the interior finishes—from flooring and paint to bathroom fittings, some sourced through Paal and others from outside suppliers. She also worked closely with Paal’s joinery manager, Craig Dayball, to create her dream kitchen. “I showed Craig what I wanted, and he brought it to life.”

The 12-month build ran smoothly and resulted in a home that exceeded their expectations. While they’ve since decided to sell to be closer to family, both agree it was their most satisfying build yet.

“We got exactly what we wanted,” says Stephen. “It was flexible, stress-free, and honestly—fun. If we ever build again, it will only be with Paal. We wouldn’t build with anyone else.”
